The Three Faces of Evil, Part 3

  • Garrett – Gnome, Druid 4 (male).
  • Cullen – Elven, Monk 4 (male).
  • Roma - Half Orc, Rogue 2, Barbarian 1, Fighter 1 (male).
  • Janna – Human, Cleric 4 (Wee Jas) (female).

Feeling more confident about themselves, the party of heroes leaves the temple of Hextor to check out the other 2 nearby temples.

Reading about the Faceless One and the temple of Vecna in Theldrick’s journal entices the explorers to head there next. Theldrick even had a key that unlocked the door leading to the labyrinth of Vecna.

The heroes slowly make their way into the labyrinth that protects the temple of Vecna, searching very carefully the walls and floor of the opening corridor. Half way down the hall Garrett notices the door right in front of him open soundlessly and a strange bird-like man looks out. When it sees the party it squawks out loud and retreats back through the door. It is killed before it can get away. Janna identifies the birdman as a Kenku.

Tyrrich and Roma search the secret door and try to determine where the Kenku came from, but the corridor the Kenku was trying escape down leads to a dead-end. Continuing on, the group heads down the corridor where they are ambushed by more Kenku from the left, and then from the right using hit-and-run tactics that the party try to quickly adapt to. The adventurers do their best to stick together o combat the Kenku and use teamwork to fight off a pair of dire weasels. They make their way to the back of the labyrinth where they encounter the leader of the Kenku and his minions. During the fight they notice the Kenku could seemingly open and close the secret passages with a thought alone making their navigation of the maze impossible to follow. After a tough battle they mop up the last of the Kenku and search the labyrinth for a place to rest. Among the dozens of secret doors, group find sleeping areas for the 3 groups of Kenku and 3 doors at the back of the labyrinth that obviously lead into another area.

With that they head back to the Land farmstead to bury the bones of Alastor’s family and then to the Whispering Cairn to see if the ghost of Alastor was able to open the door he promised. After finding out from the Innkeeper that Balabar Smenk was the one who came and claimed Filge, the group decided that it was time to meet with this notorious mine manager. Roma, the indentured servant to Balabar, went to see if the group could strike a deal with him, and Tyrrich kept an eye on the place from a distance. Soon after Roma and announce his intentions at the front gate to Balabar’s manor, Tyrrich was approached by a thug and asked if he also would join them. Reluctantly Tyrrich agreed. The Whispering Cairn, Part 1

Edit: These are posts I made back in 2005-2006 and have now transferred them here. This is put together from my game notes, most likely filled with many grammatical errors, please forgive. Tyrrich - Elven Rogue 1 (male), works as an errand boy for Mine Manager Moonmeadow. Garrett - Gnome Druid 1 (male), from the Bronzewood Lodge with animal companion Eaus, a giant Badger. Cullen - Elven Monk 1 (male), from the Twilight Monastery as an escort for kalamanthis shipments. Roma - Half Orc Rogue 1 (male), an indentured Miner working his way to freedom. Janna - Human Cleric 1 (female), a priestess of Wee Jas from the boneyard. (enters in part 2) A frequent visitor to Lazare's House for dragonchess, Tyrrich overhears conversations from some pompous newcomer adventurers looking to explore old Cairns for riches and artifacts.
